What Is an Odalan?

An Odalan is a traditional Balinese temple ceremony held to celebrate the anniversary of a temple's founding. Deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu culture, the Odalan is a vibrant spiritual event that combines sacred rituals, dance, music, offerings, and community gatherings.

Each temple in Bali has its own Odalan, typically celebrated every 210 days according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. During this time, locals dress in ceremonial attire, prepare elaborate offerings, and participate in devotional performances to honor the temple’s deity.

Experiencing an Odalan provides a rare and intimate glimpse into the island’s living spiritual heritage — a powerful reminder of the harmony between people, gods, and nature in Balinese life.
